The Darkness II finally disproves the theory that developers have to leave the main protagonist as hollow as possible in first person shooters so that the gamers can fully immerse themselves. You don't get to play as the main character Jackie, instead one of a set of four mercenaries that each have a personal weapon infused with Dark Essence. Overall Vendettas is a fun diversion with friends but a little repetitive. There is a 4 player online co-op that intertwines with the single player story filling in some back story. The single player campaign is not too long depending on difficulty level and your level of expertise, but I found the story and atmosphere so refined that I thoroughly enjoyed my play through and recommended it. That's good as they represent a better challenge.ĭo you like having two demonic tentacle heads protruding from your back that allow you to whip, grab, dismember, and look bad ass? These 4 characters do not have the Darkness but have some minor Dark abilities, which makes it a bit more difficult compared to Jackie's gameplay. You won't play with Jackie but with 4 "thugs" that will run around to accomplish some missions parallel to the main story. You have a "Vendetta" mode to play with 3 friends in some coop missions. On a bright and bad note at the same time: Coop. "Dark essence" can be found hidden here and there and once you collect enough you can buy some abilities to improve your powers. Besides weapons Jackie has the Darkness' powers, which mostly consists in two demonic snakes you can use as whips and grab enemies to brutally execute them to gain ammo or health. This gives that dark and ominous mood you see in movies when lights progressively turn off or blow up. Jackie suffers from the presence of lights and to survives he needs to blow them up before going ahead. Jackie can wield two light weapons at the same time or one heavy weapon. How does it work? The Darkenss II is an FPS, and Gameplay can be real fun. You think it's enough? Then I shouldn't mention the identity crisis the game will make you feel during the asylum section. And because of this Jackie wants to get rid of The Darkness at the same time. Jackie needs his power to get revenge and survive the most difficult situations, while the darkness needs a host that uses his powers until he gets consumed by it. The cruelty of the enemies and the main villain is equal only to Jackie while he's using the Darkness' powers and this is really fascinating, especially if you consider the struggled relationship between Jackie and The Darkness as they need each other. The story is being told by Jackie himself, sitting on a chair in the middle of dark, in the style of an "interview" with close shots, while he's entrusting you his thoughts, and narrating the events. They are a pleasure to meet and talk to while you walk in the mansion. You will Love all the characters, Aunt Sarah, Vinnie, Johhny Powell, The Darkling, Tony Cannoli (HA! Tony Cannoli!), Dolfo. The story first of all will see Jackie halfway still depressed for the loss his soulmate Jenny yet angry for the unknown forces assaulting his family. Without spoilers, there's so much to love about the game. This is not going to last as Jacki is going to become again a target of a heavy assault by misterious forces and this sense of danger will awake again the Darkness. Jackie has become the respected head of the Franchetti Family while suppressing the darkness' power. Jackie's girlfriend, Jenny, got killed by mobsters from the Franchetti Family (which he used to work for) in front of him. Jackie Estacado, our protagonist got possessed by and entity called The Darkness which inhabited previous members of his family.
